No idea where this is - I just found the panoramic view quite stirring. My guess is, it’s somewhere in Japan, given the photo contains the hidden entry to Inquiringmind Magazine (where the picture looks even more impressive; I unfortunately had to reduce its size) …

Robyn.jpgRobyn is pop, Swedish pop. Normally I don’t really like this musical style, but this Robyn is a bit different. She blends the gritty sound of American urban R&B with the sunny pop of her homeland, electronica, rap and new age to create quite a unique electro pop. She’s also openly sexual, which certainly is worth a lot of brownie points in my books (check out for example “Jack U Off” below ;) ). Finally, her musical history is quite interesting. In 1991 at the age of 12 she recorded her first hit for a Swedish TV show. By 1997, after having some of her records published in the US and UK, she was diagnosed with exhaustion at the age of 18 and returned to Sweden to recover. But after her song “Show Me Love” was prominently used in the 1998 Lukas Moodysson film Fucking Åmål, she began recording again in that same year. Even though she had a smash hit in Europe in 1999 and other artists had success with her songs, her record label BMG totally mismanaged her. So, Robyn started in 2005 her own record label: Konichiwa Records, and she hasn’t looked back ever since. In 2007, “With Every Heartbeat” reached number 1 in the singles chart in the UK - ah well, that a song i think is pretty boring - pop diva stuff.

As a matter of fact: what I like about her is that her voice is actually so pathetic (I mean what kind of voice needs to really sing ‘jack u off”!) that it again sounds good to me ;) . Complementing that pitiful voice for are some of her lyrics (like in Konichiwa Bitches, Cobrastyle or Bum like you); I guess, what appeals to me is that she’s sometimes quite outrageously vulgar, which I associate with anti-establishment (nowadays that of course is not totally true anymore, but at least it’s anti-christian ;) ). And to round off my ‘appraisal’: I think she’s quite a poor performer; I certainly wouldn’t buy a ticket to see her live! I just hope that ‘With Every Heartbeat’ is not a sign for her now slowly sinking into a mediocre pop bog.

Robyn is currently playing in Sydney.
